The best point cloud software in 2026, by job
The best point cloud software depends on the job. Checked on 24 September 2026: for free viewing, CloudCompare or the Neurones 3D viewer; for registration, Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 or CloudCompare; for aerial classification, N3D, Flai or Lidarvisor; for floor plans, PointCab or N3D; for contours, Global Mapper or N3D.

At a glance
Short statements, each one checkable. Where there is a number, it was measured, and the guides say on what.
- Written by the maker of Neurones 3D (N3D). Where N3D does not fit a job, it is left out of that job.
- Every competitor price and capability is as published on 24 September 2026, with the source linked; prices change, so check before buying.
- Criteria: does it do the job out of the box, how is it sold (free, subscription, perpetual, pay per use), does it run offline, and on which platforms.
- N3D runs on Windows only; its free viewer runs every process, and writing results out needs a paid edition bought once.
- CloudCompare is free and open source (GPL) on Windows, macOS and Linux, extended by plugins such as CSF, M3C2, qCANUPO and 3DMASC.
- Cloud classification services price by use or by size: Pointly is free up to 15 million points, Flai is pay per use, and Lidarvisor gives the first 50 ha free.
- Perpetual licences remain common: PointCab Origins Core €3,000, Global Mapper Pro about $700 to $1,050, Agisoft Metashape Pro $3,499.
The shortlist, job by job
How this list was made. This page is written by the maker of Neurones 3D, so it is not neutral. To keep it useful, each job lists at most four tools, N3D appears only where it does the job without extra software, and every competitor fact is as published on 24 September 2026, with its source linked. The criteria are the same for every tool: does it do this job out of the box, how is it sold, does it run offline, and on which platforms. Prices change; check them before you buy.
| Job | Tools to shortlist | How they are sold |
|---|---|---|
| Free viewing and editing | CloudCompare, N3D viewer, PointCab Share | Free (N3D: saving results is paid, once) |
| Registration | Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS, CloudCompare | Yearly, free |
| Aerial LiDAR classification | N3D, Flai, Lidarvisor, Pointly | One payment, pay per use, free tier by area, free tier by points |
| Floor plans, scan to BIM | PointCab Origins, N3D, Autodesk ReCap Pro | Perpetual, one payment, subscription |
| Terrain and contours | Global Mapper Pro, N3D, Lidarvisor, DJI Terra | Perpetual, one payment, free tier, free for DJI data |
| Gaussian splats | N3D | Free to view; paid to export |
Free viewing and editing
- CloudCompare: free and open source (GPL), on Windows, macOS and Linux, with a large plugin set. Reviewers on G2 cite a steep learning curve and a dated interface. The best choice if you are not on Windows or must not pay.
- Neurones 3D viewer: free on Windows, no account; opens LAS, LAZ, COPC, E57, PLY, IFC, USD and splats and runs every process, including four trained classifiers. Saving results needs a paid edition.
- PointCab Share: PointCab’s free viewer.
Registration
- Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS: $7,200 a year in Leica’s shop. A dedicated registration product.
- CloudCompare: registration at no cost.
N3D is not on this shortlist. It aligns one cloud onto another (trimmed ICP, or from the scene graph with no initial placement) and reports RMS with the inlier share, but the alignment is cloud to cloud and rigid, which is less than a registration suite offers. Trimble RealWorks, for comparison, is sold in subscription tiers; see Trimble’s documentation for what each tier includes.
Aerial LiDAR classification
- Neurones 3D: an outdoor aerial land-cover model at 86.2 % held-out accuracy and a ground filter at F1 90.3 % against IGN LiDAR HD, run offline on the CPU, each point with a confidence; plus powerline and streetscape models. It keeps a person in the loop and does not certify its own output.
- Flai: AI classification in the cloud, paid per use.
- Lidarvisor: in the browser, with AI classification, DTM and contours; the first 50 ha are free.
- Pointly: in the cloud, free up to 15 million points.
The cloud and browser services need no Windows PC; N3D keeps the data on your machine. Leica’s Cyclone 3DR also offers AI classification.
Floor plans and scan to BIM
- PointCab Origins: perpetual licences, Core €3,000; floor plans, sections and elevations, with the free PointCab Share viewer.
- Neurones 3D: draws the dimensioned plan, sections and elevations automatically, as DXF, PDF and SVG; on a 43 million point survey, 42 spaces and 21 files in 1.0 s. It does not write IFC, Revit or DWG.
- Autodesk ReCap Pro: $45 a month or $340 a year on Capterra; Revit and AutoCAD attach clouds as .rcp / .rcs, which ReCap writes. The route if you model in Revit.
Terrain and contours
- Global Mapper Pro: a perpetual licence of about $700 to $1,050 on Capterra, with LiDAR processing and contours.
- Neurones 3D: DTM, DSM, canopy height, slope, aspect, hillshade, contours that cannot cross, trees and sunlight on one grid, as GeoTIFF and GeoJSON; see point cloud to topographic map.
- Lidarvisor: DTM and contours in the browser.
- DJI Terra: LiDAR processing at no charge for DJI data.
Trimble Business Center (TBC) is now sold by subscription only, according to an rpls.com forum thread.
Gaussian splats, and making the cloud
Neurones 3D opens PLY and SPZ splats at about 60 FPS at 2 million splats, puts them beside a laser scan, converts them to points and meshes them into glTF. It does not train splats from photos. We have not checked other splat tools for this page, so none is listed.
To make a cloud from drone photos, the photogrammetry suites are Agisoft Metashape Pro ($3,499 perpetual, agisoft.com) and Pix4Dmatic ($5,990 perpetual including one year, on a Drone Nerds listing). N3D does not do photogrammetry from photos.

Questions
What is the best point cloud software?
There is no single best; it depends on the job. For free, cross-platform work, CloudCompare. For registering scans, Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS or CloudCompare. For automatic floor plans or a terrain set with contours on one Windows PC, offline, Neurones 3D or PointCab and Global Mapper. The table on this page gives one line for each.
What is the best free point cloud software?
CloudCompare is free, open source and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The Neurones 3D viewer is free on Windows and runs every process, including four trained classifiers, but saving results needs a paid edition. For DJI LiDAR, DJI Terra processes it at no charge.
What is the best software for drone LiDAR processing?
For DJI sensors, DJI Terra processes the LiDAR at no charge. For classification and terrain afterwards: N3D offline on Windows, Global Mapper Pro as a perpetual desktop licence, or Lidarvisor and Flai in the cloud.
Which point cloud software can I buy without a subscription?
As published on 24 September 2026: PointCab Origins, Global Mapper Pro and Agisoft Metashape Pro are sold as perpetual licences, Pix4Dmatic as a perpetual licence including one year,, and Neurones 3D is one payment per edition. CloudCompare is free. Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS is sold by the year, Trimble Business Center by subscription only, and Autodesk ReCap Pro by the month or year.
Is this list biased toward N3D?
It is written by N3D’s maker, so read it with that in mind. To limit the bias, N3D is only listed where it does the job out of the box, every competitor fact is dated and linked, and each section says where another tool is stronger.
Which point cloud software runs on Mac?
CloudCompare runs on macOS and Linux as well as Windows, and browser tools such as Lidarvisor run wherever a browser does. Neurones 3D is Windows only. For the other desktop tools on this page, check the maker’s system requirements.
The guides behind it
Each guide gives the menu path, the steps, the command-line equivalent and the limits.
confidence column, and split a powerline corridor into individual trees, spans and poles.
Build deliverables
Floor plans, sections and elevations
One command from raw points to a drawing set - walls between their measured faces, doors with their swing, windows with their glass, dimension chains, room areas and levels, a legend, a scale bar and a north arrow - plus sections and elevations placed where they show the most.
Build deliverables
Terrain products (DTM, DSM, CHM, contours)
Turn one ground fit into the raster set a client actually receives (DTM, DSM, canopy height, slope, aspect, hillshade, contours, trees and sunlight), all on one grid so they cannot disagree, with a README that says what is wrong with them.
Models, splats and video
Gaussian splats and level of detail
Stand inside a photoreal Gaussian splat capture (PLY or SPZ), draw it through a level-of-detail tree that keeps large captures fast, turn it into a real point cloud, or mesh it into a three-level glTF chain for a game engine.
